SolidTek Limited started out in 2016 and just three years later, we are delighted to have been shortlisted for Micro Business of the Year Award at the prestigious Knowsley Business Awards.
Now in its 17th year, the Knowsley Business Awards is the largest awards ceremony of its kind in the Liverpool City Region and an established date in business and social calendars. The annual awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 21st November 2019. The winners of each category will be announced at a prestigious dinner and awards ceremony held at the spectacular grand marquee in the grounds of Knowsley Safari Park. During dinner, there will be performances under the starlit skies, followed by a thrilling full cast dance finale.
There are a number of categories, but SolidTek decided that Micro Business of the Year would be the most appropriate to enter. Mainly because judges are looking for sole traders, partnerships and businesses that are not part of a large organisation and who can demonstrate outstanding success and/or the positive impact it has had on the community.
During the shortlisting process judges considered:
- The business journey, what makes the business a success
- Growth and financial performance to date
- Key achievements/Niche markets
- Customer, staff, stakeholder engagement and collaboration
- Staff/owner development, recruitment and training
- Evidence of innovation, effective leadership and management
- Social value e.g. Apprenticeships (created/sustained), supporting young people into work, use of local suppliers, use of local skills/labour, bringing other businesses into the supply chain, community engagement/involvement
- Future growth plans and contribution to Knowsley
Why did we enter?
SolidTek started out in January 2016 with no products or customers working out of the corner of a friend’s factory. In August 2017, SolidTek moved to its own premises on Britonwood Trading Estate in Knowsley (just 4 doors down from the corner of the factory where it all began!). Today we are offering an unmatched range of high performance solid chemical products which are being used by over 50 companies spread across the UK and Europe.
And SolidTek continues to grow. In 2019 the SolidTek family has grown to 7 staff in total, 3 of whom
are young apprentices.
We have taken on a new apprentice Stephen who joins us on our journey to work alongside Tom and Cameron our first and second apprentices.
In our submission, we talked about our working relationships with partners across the Knowsley and Liverpool City Region and our ongoing commitment to working with them .
We have links with the Knowsley Chamber of Commerce, and regularly attend events to support the wider business network in this area. We also contribute to the Knowsley manufacturing forum.
In 2018 we secured business growth funding from Merseyside Special Investment Fund (MSIF). The funding was used for expansion and also research and development. We are working on a project with LCR 4.0 and Liverpool John Moores University to develop new chemical dispensing equipment. The first stage of the project has been completed but there’s more to come as together with the Manufacturing Growth Hub we are working on making this equipment ready for commercial release.
The working relationships forged with Merseyside Special Investment Fund (MSIF), LCR 4.0 and Liverpool John Moores University, Knowsley Chamber of Commerce and the Knowsley Manufacturing forum demonstrates that we are keen to forge strong working links with local organisations and educational establishments rooted in the Knowsley and Merseyside area.
It’s been an extremely busy but rewarding 3 years and being recognised and shortlisted for Micro Business of the Year is just so exciting for the SolidTek team.
